Whether you want a memorable day sail experience, to advance your training and certification, or to charter a yacht, New England Sailing Center (NESC) offers a broad range of courses and sailing opportunities. Beginner through advanced sailors can join group or private training courses ranging from introductory to accelerated curriculum options. New England Sailing Center (NESC) is an accredited US Sailing training facility.

For those new to sailing we offer Intro to Sailing experiences on Newport Harbor’s beautiful waters. Our qualified instructors and team members provide support and guidance to ensure you gain sailing knowledge, hands on experience and confidence while also enjoying your time on the water. US Sailing Certification and Courses

New England Sailing Center and US Sailing Certifications

New England Sailing Center is an accredited US Sailing training facility.


  • Competent Crew Endorsement:
  • Course for students and family members wanting to experience sailing without a detailed training regimen or certification. Participants can be as hands on as they would like to gain sufficient knowledge to support certified sailors for recreational sailing.

  • Basic Keelboat Certification:
  • Two day Basic Keelboat course teaching you the fundamental principles of sailing. Successful training completion qualifies you to sail an 18 to 27 foot keelboat in a safe, confident manner. You have the option to test for your US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification written exam at the conclusion of the course.

  • International Bareboat Cruising Certification:
  • Five day International Bareboat Cruising Certification (IBCC) course teaching you both theory and skill requirements on a cruising yacht. Successful training completion qualifies you to sail a cruising yacht up to 54 feet. You have the option to test for your US Sailing Basic Cruising and Bareboat Cruising certifications which provide you with International recognition of your qualifications.
  • Accelerated Bareboat Certification:
  • Seven day Accelerated Bareboat Certification (ABC) course for motivated students to complete a fast track program advancing them from beginner to bareboat certification. Successful training completion qualifies you to sail a cruising yacht up to 54 feet. You have the option to test for your US Sailing Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising and Bareboat Cruising certifications which provide you with International recognition of your qualifications.
  • Coastal Navigation Certification:
  • Eight hour Coastal Navigation theory course teaching you how to safely navigate a sailing yacht in coastal or inland waters. A combination of traditional techniques and electronic navigation systems will be covered. You have the option to test for your US Sailing Coastal Navigation certification at the conclusion of the course.
  • Coastal Passage Making Certification:
  • Five day Coastal Passage Making is for advanced sailors looking for experience of at least 50 nautical miles upon coastal waters. Some of the skills taught include night time approaches to anchorages, night time man overboards, full on navigation, lights at night, standing watches and safety items one must know when sailing out of sight of land.
  • Offshore Passage Making Certification:
  • Offshore Passage Making graduates will have successfully demonstrated the ability to responsibly skipper and crew an inboard auxiliary powered cruising sailboat to any destination worldwide. Students will prepare a plan for an open ocean passage of at least 600 nautical miles of which a minimum of 250 nautical miles must be sailed at least 50 nautical miles offshore; demonstrate a comprehensive check of the vessel, her rig and equipment; develop a primary and alternative watch schedule and duty roster for the skipper, navigator, crew and ship’s maintenance for the passage; demonstrate a plan of advanced weather forecasting: global weather patterns, high and low pressure systems, fronts, storms, squalls, gales, hurricanes and various fog conditions; and more.
  • VHF Certification:
  • One day, covering general rules for the use and operation of VHF radios, SARTs, and EPIRBs. Every crew member needs to know how to operate a marine radio as well as what to do in case of an emergency. This course also covers an introduction to other marine communications. Students qualify to test for the International Yacht Training (IYT) VHF Radio Operator Certificate.

  • NESC Intro to Sailing 3-hour afternoon or sunset sail on Newport Harbor

    SPECIAL: 2-for-1 intro to sailing on J22/J24 (a three hour sailing experience)

    Enjoy a three hour sail on a J22 (22 foot keelboat with tiller ) or J24 (24 foot keelboat with tiller) with New England Sailing Center and discover the principles of sailing. You can experience sailing while also having the option to gain hands on experience. The J22 and J24 both offer strength, stability and speed unmatched in a keelboat of their size.

    Intro to Sailing is a great option for individuals that are trying to determine if sailing is right for them before taking the Basic Keelboat course. NESC holds up to two sessions daily in both group and private formats.
